So... it’s been awhile since I’ve talked about my book.

Usually when someone goes dark on their blog or any site they may use to talk about their book and/or writing, it regularly means bad news. The person either gave up entirely or fell behind in some way. Perhaps maybe they still are chasing that dream, but really aren’t making any substantial process.

I can say that is not the case with me at all. Not by a long shot.

In my last update, I wrote about how I had decided to raise the story count for my book (which is a collection of short stories) from ten stories to thirteen. I also stated that I had written the eleventh story for the book. Well, boys and girls, I finished those last two stories. I hit my goal of thirteen and can now say that the writing process of my book is finally complete.

Which brings me to the next thing I have been up to.

Editing.

I completely re-wrote the first story I had finished for my book. If you read what I had before and compared it to what I have now, it’s insane how much my writing has improved. I guess the old saying is true, practice makes perfect.

The truth of why I haven’t been posting on here as much basically comes down to time. I landed a new job at the tail end of last year and have been working hard. The free time I have either goes into writing or just relaxing. However, now that I am more accustom to this new position I am going to try to not be so distant from this blog.

You can always follow me on Twitter and Facebook if you’d like to hear from me more often.

That’s all I have for now. Until next time... keep writing.

Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02454648350599703167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4544233646970274491.post-18755364433565451672018-10-05T10:00:00.000-04:002018-10-05T10:00:10.671-04:00Terrortory 2 is Here!Hey there! I know it’s been awhile since my last post, and that I have been slacking majorly on this blog, but for now just know that I am fine. Nothing crazy happened to me or anything like that. I plan on writing an update post soon.

For now, I want to let you know that my new film, Terrortory 2, is out now for everyone to see.

Oh, and it’s FREE!

If you remember, I stared in the first Terrortory as Smiling Jack (I also played the role of Gotz as well.) You can read all about that here. Well, Smiling Jack is back for Terrortory 2. As you can see on the poster below, I made it front and center as Smiling Jack once again.

Honestly, this is truly amazing to me. As a huge fan of the likes of Jason Voorhess, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger (to name a few), it’s crazy to think that I am starring in a movie as a killer, just like them, and featured on the poster. Not once, but twice.

So, if you’re a big horror fan, or just a little bit of a horror fan, please go watch Terrortory 2. It’s free on Amazon Video throughout the month of October to anyone that is a Prime member. When you do watch it, could you please drop us an Amazon review, it would really help us out.

I hope you enjoy the movie as much as me and the rest of the cast and crew enjoyed making it. Who knows, maybe one day we'll see a Smiling Jack spinoff movie?

Where I rank all the horror movies I've watched over the year and attempt to rank them in a list for you to enjoy.

That being said, here is my list...

10. Jigsaw (AKA Saw VIII)

I am a huge fan of the Saw franchise, and ever since the ending of Saw VII (The Final Chapter) I’ve been chomping at the bit for another movie in the series. Well, after seven long years we finally have a sequel with Jigsaw. This entry didn’t really wow me like the others in the series did the first time I viewed them, but it was still fun to watch and to be in that universe again. The ending was a little lacking compared to the previews entries. Here’s hoping to another sequel with perhaps some returning faces.

9. Life

Life may be like the movie Alien in the sense that they are both sci-fi horror that take place in space where people discover some type of new life form, then all hell breaks loose. However, the execution of those plot elements and how everything all plays out is what makes them so different from one another. I really enjoyed Life, and found it to be a creepy, messed up movie. Although I kind of saw the ending coming, I give the filmmakers credit for doing an ending that isn’t typical. (Trying to be as vague as possible here to avoid spoiler territory.)

8. Annabelle: Creation

The thing I find funny about Annabelle: Creation is that it’s a similar situation to the Ouija movies. The first Ouija movie and the first Annabelle I did not like whatsoever. However, the second film, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation are awesome horror movies. What’s even more funny is that Origin of Evil and Creation are both prequels. Oh, and they both star Lulu Wilson. I don’t know, I just find that interesting. Annabelle: Creation, as you could guess, explorers the creation of the Annabelle doll and how things came to be. Creation has a much spookier vibe that I felt the first Annabelle was lacking.

7. Get Out

This movie had a lot of hype surrounding it by the time I got to sit down and watch it. However, I ended up just enjoying the movie, instead of loving it like everyone else seemed to be. I must say that I praise it for it’s originality. It does have some clever twists and turns in it that will keep you guessing. I am usually pretty good at guessing what is going to happen in movies, but this is one of those movies you could never guess how things will ultimately play out.

6. The Babysitter

Some might not consider The Babysitter a horror movie because it features comedy, but so did Shaun of the Dead and I consider that a horror movie. Horror isn’t defined by one thing, but a movie where a boy discovers that his babysitter is part of a cult, wants to perform a satanic ritual with human sacrifice in his home, and wants to kill him as well, sounds like a horror movie to me. The Babysitter is completely bat-shit crazy, and hilarious. You will never guess what is going to happen next. The only negative thing that I can say about The Babysitter is that it’s a Netflix original movie and I can’t buy it on blu-ray.

5. Gerald's Game

Gerald’s Game is a weird movie, but I like weird, so that’s a compliment coming from me. Based on a novel by Stephen King, and directed by Mike Flannagan. (who has made some great horror movies like Hush, which made my 2016 list.) With such a simple premise of a woman stuck tied to a bed, Gerald’s Game does a great job at keeping things fresh and thrilling. As with The Babysitter, Gerald’s Game is a Netflix original movie therefore I cannot buy it on blu-ray. Keep up the great work Netflix, but could you please start releasing things on blu-ray. (I’m still waiting on Hush.)

4. The Blackcoat’s Daughter

I’m not usually a fan of slow-burn horror movies, but I guess some surprise me from time to time. The Blackcoat’s Daughter is one of those movies. The premise of the movie is simple, but the films story unravels with such tension and mystery that it keeps you firmly engaged, even if it is moving along slowly. The definition that a great story is key. I found myself drawn into it, wanting to know what the hell was going on, and just how the story was going to wrap up. To me, it didn’t disappoint, a slow-burn done right.

3. The Poughkeepsie Tapes

I know The Poughkeepsie Tapes was technically released in 2007. However, it was only released at a film festival, which meant not everyone could go and see it. The movie was supposed to have a theatrical release in February of 2008, but it was pulled for unknown reasons. Now in 2017, the film has finally been released to the masses, thanks to the heroes over at Scream Factory. I got to see this movie awhile back and absolutely loved it, but since it was never officially released I never added it to any of my top 10 lists. I always told myself that the year it was finally released would be the year it would make the top 10. Since this year is that year, I now consider The Poughkeepsie Tapes a 2017 film for the sake of this list. Anyway, this movie is completely messed up and downright disgusting. The documentary style really adds to the unsettling nature as it feels like what you are watching actually happened. To me, this is possibly one the best found footage movies ever made.

2. The Devil’s Candy

A movie about a crazy serial killer, demonic-esque possession, with heavy metal music as the soundtrack? Where do I sign up? The Devil’s Candy is a great, twisted horror movie. It takes the cliché of a family moving into a new home only to have weird things begin to happen to them and flips it on its head. Without spoiling anything, the way the serial killer was depicted in the film gives the movie some genuinely disturbing scenes. Also, the use of the metal music in the soundtrack adds credence to the film. The songs aren’t just thrown into the movie to be edgy or cool; yeah, it’s cool, but the songs serve a purpose and is almost an extension of the movies characters.

1. IT

I must be honest, when I first heard they were making a movie based on Stephen King’s IT, a remake of the 1990 mini-series, I wasn’t excited in the slightest. Also, when I first saw the official photo of the new Pennywise, it did nothing for me. However, I still went and saw it, because the previews had something about them that I couldn’t explain. They drew me to it and gave me this feeling that it might be good after all. I guess my subconscious was right, because it was. Pennywise looks goofy if you look at him out of the context of the film, which I guess makes sense, because he is a clown after all; but within the movie he is one creepy son of a bitch. He definitely steals every scene he is in, like how the Joker did in The Dark Knight. I really went into this movie with my expectations low and left loving the hell out of it. There were a few great horror movies this year, but none of them really wowed me like IT did when I left the theater.

Honorable Mentions: 47 Meters Down, The Void

So there it is, my Top 10 Horror Films of 2017. If you haven’t seen or even heard of any of these films, then I suggest you really look into them. If you’re into horror, then you should at least give them a rent.

Disclaimer: I would like to add that although I watch a lot of horror films and I try to see everything, I didn’t get to see every single horror film that was released this year. This is not my job; it’s just a hobby of mine. So if you don't see something great on this list, it’s most likely because I did not get to see it... yet. Also, this list is my opinion and my opinion only. If you do not agree with it, then that is okay. Feel free to post your top 10 in the comments, but please, let's not start a war over this. It is just a list.
Jason Voorhees has always been my favorite among the killers and slashers throughout the history of horror cinema. As of this writing, there have been seven actors and countless stunt performers to portray the role of Jason Voorhees. Eight if you count A New Beginning, but that was an imposter.

Ever since I ranked the Friday the 13th movies from worst to best (should have been Best to Best), I wanted to make some kind of list about the Jason character. That being said, I thought I’d make a list of my favorite appearances of Jason.

There are eleven possible candidates for this list. Jason from parts 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, JGTH, X, X-Uber, FvJ, and the Remake. I am not counting Part 5 as it was Roy Burns. (I know you can say that Jason was technically in the movie as an hallucination, but I am not counting that.)

Here are my top 5 favorites...

5. Jason from Friday the 13th Part 3 (in 3D!) played by Richard Brooker.

R.I.P. Richard Brooker

Jason from Part 3 was such a step up from the Jason in Part 2. He became more cold blooded, and menacing, both in nature and visual presence. Jason in Part 3 displays an almost, “I don’t give shit anymore,” attitude; perhaps as a result of being wounded and embarrassed by Ginny at the end of Part 2.

Of course there are sequences in the film where he runs around, genuinely wanting to catch his next victim, but unlike the Jason featured in Part 2, there are scenes where he looks like he just does not care. Like how he walks away after killing Vera with the harpoon gun, as if nothing even happened. To add to that, Jason lurks around unmasked in this movie for quite a while, as if concealing his face isn’t a concern anymore either. Remember, the Jason in Part 2 ran from the police officer. If a scene like that had happened to the Jason portrayed in Part 3, I bet he would have ran toward any cop in front of him and killed them without hesitation, then would have walked away like it was nothing.

And how could I mention Part 3 Jason without saying that this was the first time he put on the hockey mask? Something which would go on to become an iconic aspect of the character. Like a match made in Heaven, er, Hell.

4. Jason from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives played by C.J. Graham.

Jason Lives is arguably one of the best sequels in the franchise. This portrayal of Jason Voorhees is the version I remember watching the most of as a child. I have probably watched Jason Lives more than any other movie in the series. Therefore, when I think of Jason, his look in Jason Lives is one of the ones that pops in my head first.

The opening scene of Jason Lives is also one of my favorites. Usually Jason’s face isn’t revealed until near the end of the movie, but in Jason Lives, his bare face is on full display right at the beginning. It’s always a cool treat to see Jason’s face, something the more recent films have seemed to ignore, but I love seeing Jason battling Tommy and Hawes with his rotting, maggot and worm covered mug showing. (Maggothead!)

This opening starts the movie just right. Not only did it bring Jason back from the dead, but it showed the audience that the real Jason was back, and possibly stronger, angrier, and badder than ever before. C.J. Graham captured that intensity perfectly in his performance as Jason. With the addition of a utility belt of sorts on the costume, Jason appeared much more tactical than previous versions.

3. Jason from Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood played by Kane Hodder.

I’m not sure the reasoning why any previous actors in the series didn’t come back to portray Jason more than once, but that all changed when Kane Hodder put on the hockey mask. Kane ended up playing Jason in four films; Parts 7, 8, 9 and X. (He played Jason again in the 2017 Friday the 13th video game, providing the mocap for all the Jason’s in the game.)

Out of all the movies Kane Hodder played Jason, his New Blood Jason is my favorite. Although I really love the look of Jason in all the films in one way or another, the costume and makeup for Jason in The New Blood looks so damn cool. Especially Jason’s face, once it’s revealed. The amount of work, thought, and care that went into the details of that costume is something still mesmerizing to this day. I mean, just look at it. I always smile from ear to ear when Jason stands up out of the water towards the beginning of the film and his spine is showing through the back of his clothes.

Then there is the kills. Jason is a damn killing machine in The New Blood. I mean, he’s a killing machine in every movie, but in this movie he really goes all out. Even using new weaponry in his arsenal. (Like some gas powered tree limb cutter thing?) It’s just a shame that the MPAA forced them to cut back most of the kills to achieve an R rating. I know it’s probably impossible at this point, but I always wished there was a way to restore the cut footage and produce a proper Director’s Cut version of The New Blood. (Maybe one day.)

2. Jason from Friday the 13th (2009) played by Derek Mears.

Say what you want about the 2009 remake/reboot of Friday the 13th, but can we all agree that the portrayal of Jason by Derek Mears is one of the best in the franchise? I know that’s a bold statement, but every Jason fan I’ve talked to has never said one bad thing about Jason in the reboot.

After the Frankenstein-like Jason we saw in Freddy vs. Jason, it was nice to see Jason’s quick ferocious power once again. (Don’t get me wrong, I loved Freddy vs. Jason. I just thought Jason could have been played better.) A lot of people hated the fact that Jason ran in the remake, but as a lifelong fan of the franchise and the character, this did not bother me. (Jason did run, be it brief, in Parts 2 and 3.)

The new hockey mask is beautiful, and the new sackhead version of Jason in the beginning of the movie was pulled off brilliantly. It was actually chilling to see him like that once again. Dare I say, scary? The remake has its flaws, but when it comes to Jason, there are none.

1. Jason from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter played by Ted White.

Jason Voorhees in The Final Chapter is my favorite Jason of them all, and perhaps the best Jason ever to appear on screen. Ted White, the man behind the mask in the fourth installment of the franchise, took what Richard Brooker started in Part 3 and amped it up tremendously. That, “I don’t give shit anymore,” attitude that I mentioned above seemed to be cranked to eleven.

Jason genuinely seems pissed off throughout the entire movie. Some key scenes that I feel demonstrate this are his kills in the morgue, his chase scene with Trish, and when he grabs Tommy through the window. Then, most of all, the scene where Jason bursts through the door near the end (my favorite shot in the movie). Broken wood pieces fly everywhere as he slams through the door. Then, without missing a beat, he throws a hammer at Trish. Although he misses her, the hammer sticks into the wall just inches from her head.

Jason Voorhees was such a badass in The Final Chapter that even when they attempted to kill the character off for good, hence The Final Chapter subtitle, it didn’t work.

-----

Well there is my list. I hope you enjoyed it. In conclusion, Jason Voorhees is and always will be my favorite horror movie character. I love each movies portrayal of him in some way or another. The ones on this list are just my favorites. Here is hoping we see Jason again real soon up on that big screen.

Feel free to leave a comment with your favorites Jasons.

In my last update, I toyed with the idea of upping the story count of my book, which is a collection of short stories, from ten stories to thirteen. Well, I decided to go with thirteen. Mainly because it’s my book and I can do whatever I want; but also because, like I said before, thirteen is my favorite number. The Friday the 13th movie series might have played a part in that, but I don’t see anything wrong with it, wink wink.

As of late, my brain has overflowed with ideas. The most I have ever had before in my life. I’ve always had a creative mind, coming up with movie ideas and stories, but lately I feel it has ramped up. Maybe it’s because I have been eating healthier? I don’t know. Whatever it is, knock on wood that my brain keeps it up.

That being said, I would really like to write a few more stories, get them all down on paper (or on my computer), before I head into the editing process of the book.

I know I have been talking and giving updates about this book for what seems like an eternity, but things take time. I could have probably released this book last year, if I had rushed it, but I don’t like to rush things. “It’s done when it’s done,” is a quote that keeps coming to my mind, and is something I keep telling myself.

Since my last update, I’ve completed writing another two stories, which brings my total now to eleven. One of the stories I just completed was actually a story I started writing years ago, but could never really figure it out. An idea hit me recently, (that overflowing I mentioned) and the story seemed to finally have that missing piece I always felt it needed.

This book might be taking time, but this beast will get finished. I created a roadmap of sorts, with key dates as small deadlines that will help me stay on track for that goal.

I have a plan, and my motivation is just a strong as it was when I typed the first word.
M.T. If you haven’t had the chance to see Terrortory yet (what are you waiting for?) and are hesitant to pick up the DVD, you can still check it out pretty cheaply on Amazon Video.

Also, Terrortory 2 is happening!

I am set to reprise my role as the crazy pumpkin head killer, Smiling Jack. I held onto the costume after we had wrapped on the first movie, everything minus the head. The director hung on to that. A few months back, I pulled out the costume, which I had kept inside a cardboard box, and hiked back into the woods once more for a photoshoot. This is the result of that shoot...

I am really looking forward to playing this role again. Smiling Jack, although wacky looking with his big pumpkin head, is 100% pure badass. You really shouldn’t go into his area of the Terrortory, but people still do. I have read the script for my part and heard a lot of ideas from director Kevin Kangas about the rest of the movie. I'm not spilling anything, but from what I've heard, it sounds like it's really going to be one hell of a sequel. I can't wait!
Wow, it’s February already?

I am still chugging away on my book. I have only one more story to complete before the book will ready for full blown editing mode. Some of the stories I have I think are pretty much ready to go (except for maybe the random typos). However, I want to go back and revisit them, one at a time, and give them all the attention they deserve.

I slowed down on writing my book a bit for the holidays, plus I took some time away and jumped into writing a short screenplay (about 18 pages) from an idea that popped in my head last October. I wrote it mainly for fun, to get it out of my head and down on paper, but I plan on sending it to my filmmaker buddy to see if he likes it.

Who knows what will happen? I know nothing is guaranteed other than him reading it. He might like it, but he might not. Either way, it was pretty exciting working on a screenplay again. I figured if all else fails and nothing were to happen with it, I could submit it to a short screenplay contest or maybe just rewrite it as short story for another book. We will see, as the saying goes.

Like I said, writing a screenplay again, short or not, got me really excited. I finished my first screenplay way back in July of 2014 (damn time flies!). I’ve been hard focused on completing my book, so I haven't worked on anything screenplay related since then. So now I have this itch to write my second feature length screenplay.

They say the second one is easier than the first. I just need to think of something and flesh it out to fill the 90-ish pages. I’m sure my (odd) brain will think of something, but I am anxious to get started. Once I finish the last story for my book, oh it’s on.

(Oh yes, there will be blood.)

Where I rank all the horror movies I watched over the year and attempt to rank them in a list for you to enjoy. I thought 2015 was a good year for horror films, but it felt to me that 2016 crushed last year. Here is hoping 2017 will be just as good, perhaps better. (New Friday the 13th coming October 2017! Wooooo!)

I have not included my new film Terrortory. Since I appear in it, I feel it wouldn’t be right to include. (Even though it would be #1, wink wink.) However, you can still watch it for FREE.

That being said, here is my list...

10. Blair Witch (2016)

This movie got a lot of hate this year, and in my opinion the hate was unwarranted. I think Blair Witch didn’t live up to everyone's overblown hype for it. By what the marketing of the film lead everyone to believe, I think a lot of people went into this thinking it was going to be the scariest movie ever made in the history of mankind. I did find the movie creepy towards the end, but obviously I’ve seen much more frightening films. However, I’ve seen countless horror films in my life to know that judging a film on scare factor alone is just ridiculous. That being said, I really enjoyed Blair Witch. Throw all that hype away and just watch the movie, you might enjoy it.

9. Emelie

Do you have kids? Ever pay for a babysitter? Well, if you answered yes, chances are you probably won’t ever want to again after you watch this crazy movie. Emelie is about a replacement babysitter filling in to watch three young children while their parents go out for the night. However, this babysitter is downright crazy, subjecting the kids to activities that are insane and disturbing. I don’t even have children and it got to me. Things take an even darker turn when you find out the truth about Emelie and what her motives actually are. Enjoy, Parents.

8. Southbound

I really love me a good horror anthology film and Southbound did not disappoint. I don’t even know what to say without giving too much away about the movie, but what I will say it that it was good, it was dark, it was weird, and you should see it. What I found unique about this film is that each story cleverly blended right into the next one. For example, at one part a character that we had been following entered a motel room and closed the door behind them. The camera then panned over to the next motel room and a new character emerged from inside to which we began following their story. I just found them all to be really cool and creative, which only added to the this already good movie.

7. Lights Out

If you didn’t already know, Lights Out is based on a short film of the same title by the same director. Search “Lights Out Short Film” on YouTube if you want to check it out. Lights Out is about an entity that can only appear (and attack and kill you) when in complete darkness. It’s a very creative idea as the characters in the film have to think of ways to combat this force using lights. It gives a whole new meaning to being afraid of the dark. (P.S. Why is the short film not on the Blu-ray as a Special Feature?)

6. Quija 2: Origin of Evil

I have to start by saying that the first Quija is not very good. When I heard Mike Flanagan was directing the sequel/prequel, it got me excited. Quija 2 blows the first film out of the water, hands down. It did not disappoint. The story takes place in the 1960s, and the movie even feels like it was shot then as well with the retro opening logos and cigarette burns in the corner like old film reels. You have to appreciate that level of detail. I have to say that the young girl (Lulu Wilson) in the movie did an awesome job. She really pulled off the possessed creepster perfectly. Mike Flanagan is easily becoming one of my new favorite writer/directors.

5. Hangman

Hangman follows a serial killer setting up residence in the attic of a family's home. With hidden cameras he watches them as they sleep and go about their daily lives, strategically toying with them along the way. Hangman was released earlier this year and didn’t have much word of mouth around it. If you didn’t know about it before its release, chances are you probably still haven’t heard much about it; which is sad because I found it to be one the most disturbing and nerve racking found-footage movies I have probably ever seen. For this reason, I love it! If you know me or read any of my lists, then you know I love a good found-footage movie, and this one definitely stands out amongst the subgenre. (I plan to do a top 10 found-footage list one day.)

4. The Shallows

I think it is safe to say that The Shallows is probably the best shark movie since Jaws. This is how shark movies need to be. This movie keeps building the tension all the way to the very end. I prefer practical effects above CGI, but I know when it comes to making something like a shark it’s probably easier to go CG. That being said, whoever worked on the effects of the shark did an amazing job. You’ll forget you are even watching a CG shark halfway through the movie.

3. Hush

This movie kind of snuck up on me. Releasing exclusively to Netflix streaming, Hush follows Maddie, a young writer fighting to stay alive from a stalking masked killer lurking outside her isolated home. The twist? Maddie is deaf. Being a writer myself, I really enjoyed the scenes where the Maddie character was writing or when she was plotting out different scenarios in her head when it came to the killer. I also really enjoyed the scenes where there was no sound, letting us experience things how she was. It made the sequences even more suspenseful knowing there was danger nearby and that Maddie couldn’t hear it. Mike Flanagan has two horror films on my list in the same year? Damn! Also, why has Hush not been released on Blu-ray yet? I really want to own it already.

2. The Conjuring 2

James Wan did it again - scaring the pants off everyone. Although his entry in The Fast and the Furious series was okay, horror movies is where he really shines, in my opinion. The demon nun, Valak, is probably the creepiest thing I have seen all year. Hearing that it was a last minute addition to the film is crazy to fathom. This movie could arguably be the number one horror film of the year, however this is my list and I had to put them in some kind of order.

1. Don't Breathe

I absolutely love Don’t Breathe. Fede Alvarez instantly struck me as a writer/director to keep an eye on when I saw his debut feature of the Evil Dead remake, and with Don’t Breathe he did not disappoint. The simple premise of three people breaking into a house to rob a blind man quickly turns into one hell of a ride with twists and turns layered throughout. There is no other true horror than real life. Similar to movies like You’re Next, The Strangers, and even Hush, the events that transpire during Don’t Breathe’s runtime are even more unsettling knowing that they could very well happen.

Honorable Mentions: Darling, 13 Cameras

So there it is, my Top 10 Horror Films of 2016.

So if you don't see something great on this list, it’s most likely because I did not get to see it yet. Also, this list is my opinion and my opinion only. If you do not agree with it, then that is okay. Feel free to post your top 10 in the comments, but please, let's not start a war over this. It is just a list.
Starting today and lasting throughout the month, Terrortory, the newest film I appear in, will have its premiere on Amazon Prime Video. See that guy in the poster above with the pumpkin head? Yeah, that's me!

For the entire month of October, Terrortory (trailer below) will be available, for FREE, on Amazon Prime. If you don’t have a Prime you can still watch it for a $2.99 seven day rental in HD.

Terrortory is an '80s inspired anthology horror film. If you don’t know what an anthology film is, shame on you, I’ll explain it real quick. An anthology film is a movie comprised of several short stories spanning the length of a normal movie.

This film marks a lot of firsts for me. This is the first anthology horror film I have acted in. Second, I actually got to play two roles in the film. Something that was made possible because of the fact that it's an anthology film. (And the awesome people involved of course.) Third, the roles I play are of killers. I have played zombies before, where I did kill someone on screen, but never have I portrayed a masked killer. As a die hard Jason Voorhees fan, to have the opportunity to do this was a dream come true. (And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.) Lastly, I am on the damn poster. How cool is that?

Terrortory has been a long time in the making. The scenes I was on set for were shot in September/October of 2014 and the same time again in 2015. I think I first mentioned I was filming scenes for it in this post way back in April of 2015. The world premiere screening was just last Thursday night in Baltimore, Maryland. Movies take time, and independent movies like this are no exception.

A lot of people put a ton of hard work, time, and dedication into bringing Terrortory to it’s completion. I am glad I got to be a part of it all.

I’ll keep you all posted on the inevitable DVD/Bluray release.
Not only will I get to see a lot of films I missed, but maybe I’ll find some gems in the process. On top of that, I could make a list of what I think are the best ones.

So I am doing just that. I don’t know how long this is going to take, but it’s shall be fun none to less.

10. The Children

There were a few movies I felt could go at the number ten spot. I decided on The Children, mainly because out of all the movies that didn't make the top 10, it was the one I enjoyed watching most. The movie is pretty crazy. It’s about a group of kids riding on a school bus that are poisoned with some kind of gas or something, and then go around town killing people by hugging/touching them. The special effects might be dated, sure; but I feel it just adds to the campiness of the film.

Don’t Go In The House is one of the many "Don’t" titled horror movies, but DON’T let that deter you. Don’t Go In The House was actually really cool. The film is about a guy who is a pyromaniac (resulting from a not so great childhood) and decides to make a room inside his house fireproof. Afterwards, he lures women to his newly renovated room so he can then burn them alive for his own sick enjoyment.

8. Terror Train

Terror Train is similar to most other '80s slasher flicks: Something awful happened in the past and now people are dying - only this time, people are being picked off on a train. Although the killer was rather predictable, it was a decent entry into the slasher genre. The film stars Jamie Lee Curtis of Halloween fame and also stars David Copperfield as The Magician. Yes, a real life magician plays a magician in the movie.

7. City of the Living Dead

One of the more famous films by Italian director Lucio Fulci (R.I.P.), City of the Living Dead is a crazy, gory ride. After the Gates of Hell are opened as the result of a clergyman’s suicide, the dead are now rising from their graves. The film features some pretty awesome '80s makeup effects.

6. The Changeling

To sum it up, The Changeling is a ghost story set mostly inside a haunted mansion, but there is so much more to it than that. Unlike most other ghostly horror movies, this film actually has likable characters. There is also a mystery surrounding the haunting that is interesting to watch unfold as the main character pieces everything together. If you are looking for a great movie from 1980 to watch without all the gore, The Changeling is probably the least goriest film on this list.

5. Maniac

I’ll admit that I saw the 2013 remake of Maniac starring Elijah Wood before seeing the 1980 original. However, I did not enjoy the remake in the slightest. After watching the original in my quest to watch every '80s horror movie, I must say it is hands down the superior film. If you have any fascination with serial killers, like I do, then you’re going to like Maniac. The movie lives up to the name, as killer Frank Zito (played by Joe Spinell, R.I.P.) truly is a Maniac.

4. Alligator

I loved Alligator when I was a kid. I had it recorded on a VHS tape and I think I must have watched it a thousand times. (I’m surprised the tape didn’t break.) There are a lot of horror movies out there that revolve around a killer alligator or crocodile, but in my opinion, Alligator is the best of them all. You won’t see any CGI alligators in this film, just practical special effects and sometimes even the real thing.

3. The Fog

Directed by the legendary John Carpenter, The Fog is probably one of the few films of his that I somehow never saw. Well now I have, and I loved it. The story centers around a glowing fog that rolls into a small town at midnight, bringing with it death and unraveling a mystery about the town that was believed to be just folktales. John Carpenter adds his signature music once again, adding to the atmosphere of the film.

2. Friday the 13th

That’s right, the original that started it all. The iconic machete wielding, hockey mask wearing killer, Jason Voorhees, is not in this film! As Ghostface said in Scream, "...you should know that Jason's mother, Mrs. Voorhees was the original killer. Jason didn't show up until the sequel." Although the film is low budget, like many horror movies are, this one still holds up pretty well compared to other films released later into the '80s. Betsy Palmer (R.I.P.) really steals the show as Pamela Voorhees.

1. The Shining

This is hands down the best horror film of 1980. We can argue all day about which movies represent the top ten from the year, but there is no arguing The Shining is number one. Jack Nicholson stars as Jack Torrance, a writer that accepts a job as Winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. He settles in, along with his wife and son, hoping to finish a new novel. As the time goes by, it seems as though the isolation and the hotel’s dark past takes a toll on Jack. The only thing he manages to accomplish is going completely insane. Directed by Stanley Kubrick (R.I.P.) and loosely based off the novel by Stephen King, The Shining is a wild physiological ride.

Honorable Mention: Macabre

So there you have it, now on to 1981.

It has been about six months since my previous Book Update. As you can see from the fancy progress bar above, I am now 80% complete the writing portion of my book. What does that mean? That means I have finished two more short stories for my book since my last update back in February.

As I mentioned before, having a full-time job and other responsibilities limits how much time I have to devote to writing. This is another reason why I aim for only one blog post a month. At least I am progressing though, that’s saying something, right?

Writing a little each day is still better than nothing at all.

When I originally set out to write this book, my plan was to write ten short stories. My progress bar at the top is based on me writing those ten stories. Lately however, I have been contemplating the idea of expanding it to thirteen. Thirteen has always been a favorite number of mine.

I am not completely sure if I am going to commit to this change or not. It’s not that I am at a loss for ideas. I have more than enough ideas to add three more stories to the lineup. To me, it’s more about the fact that this book has been a long time in the making. Adding three more stories is going to take more time. I guess this is something I can decide when I hit that 100% mark.

What would you all do if it was your book? Let me know in the comments.

In Other News...

I added a new page to the sidebar a while back. If you haven't noticed, it’s called A List of Lists. This page is a collection of all the lists I have compiled here on my blog. All on one page for easy reading. Check it out!

Next month I’ll be adding a new Top 10 list (my opinion) of something I have been working on for the past several months. Just part one in a long adventure. You’ll understand when you see it. Be sure to check back for that.

This Summer has been way to hot. Can it be Fall now, please?
Seeing a newly released film on the big screen will always be truly amazing. I treat it as if it were an event, or some kind of special privilege, so much so that I keep all my movie stubs.

That being said...

I saw The Conjuring 2 recently, it was a great movie, but I had an awful theater experience. People talking, shouting, cell phones ringing, just making all kinds of noise in general during the movie. So much in fact that at certain points in the movie the suspense was ruined, or the dialogue could not be heard clearly.

After doing some thinking about this, I feel it’s no wonder that people pass on seeing movies in the theater and opt to wait for them to release on Blu-ray/DVD, Video On Demand (VOD) or some other internet streaming service.

A part of me says, why don’t I just skip the theater from now on and simply watch them when they become available for me to get at home? That way I can watch them in peace and quiet. I mean, I do have a nice size television and an awesome surround sound system. There isn’t anything really stopping me.

However, aside from the fact that my television will most likely never match the big screen experience the movie theaters offer, my love and passion for the genre IS what stops me from skipping the theatrical run. I want to support Horror in every way I can, and I feel the best way to do that is to see them when they are released theatrically.

Talking (or just being disruptive) in the theater during the movie isn’t anything new. It has happened to me in the past (and sadly will probably happen again), but this time it really got to me. It also made me realize something: It is usually Horror movies that are the most susceptible to this kind of inconsiderate behavior.

Whenever I go see an Action movie or Comedy, people seem a little more behaved. There aren’t many distractions or disruptions. I saw Captain America: Civil War (also a great movie) a few weeks back and did not have any issues. I feel like no one made a peep. I really don’t know why this is, but I feel it has a lot to do with sound.

Horror movies revolve a lot around sound (or the lack thereof) to build tension and suspense. When a scene gets eerily quiet to build up a frightening moment and someone in the theater is talking, or their phone starts ringing, or (my favorite) they yell “Ahh!” in hopes to scare a nearby friend; it ruins the scene and takes you out of the movie.

With something like Civil War for example, the action scenes are filled with loud fights and explosions. Things that can mask the audiences talking or rude distractions. Someone would have to be pretty loud for you to hear them over scenes like that.

In the end, it saddens me how many people can be disrespectful to others when inside a movie theater. We all paid our hard earned money to watch the same film, why don’t we all just sit back and enjoy it? You don’t need to entertain your friends the whole time, that is what the movie is for. We don’t need your commentary, and I think you will survive going two hours without your phone.

It seems the true horror of seeing a horror movie in the theater is the people who ruin it.

On behalf of the horror movie fan base... I ask simply, please stop ruining our horror movies.

On the bright side… The Conjuring 2 came in at #1 at the Box Office in it's opening weekend, beating out an action Summer blockbuster. Not too many Horror movies can say that.M.T. Jason Voorhees fascinated me as a kid, I always saw him as the most ruthless killer in horror. To celebrate this Friday the 13th, I thought I would rank all the films in a list from worst to best.

NOTE: I love all the Friday the 13th films, so I use the word “worst” loosely. To me, each one of them is great in their own way, but if I truly had to rank them, this is how I would do it.

12. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Jason Goes to Hell will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first Jason movie I saw in the theaters (I was 8, thanks mom!) However, it does have its flaws. Although I enjoy it, I was bummed with the whole “body hopping” concept. We want to see Jason and the hockey mask, it’s that simple. The gore in the unrated cut of the film help make up for it though.

My Favorite Kill: Deborah getting impaled with a rail spike and torn in half vertically.

11. Jason X (2001)

Jason X, or what some call “Jason in Space,” is a weird movie. To be honest, out of all the “in space” gimmick movies in horror, Jason X is possibly the most tolerable. It has some pretty decent gore and a high body count to make up for its non-camp setting. Jason X is fun to watch if you don’t take it too seriously, but compared to others in the franchise, it's pretty lackluster.

My Favorite Kill: Adrienne getting her face frozen in liquid nitrogen, then smashed and shattered on the counter.

10. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

The last film in the original series from Paramount, and the last one to be released in the 80's, Jason Takes Manhattan went in a different direction from the previous films. Removing Jason from the iconic Camp Crystal Lake and sending him to New York City. Although most of the scenes take place on a ship and the ending leaves you scratching your head, the movie is a fun ride.

My Favorite Kill: Eva getting strangled. The sounds she makes when landing on the dance floor after Jason let’s go of her. Brutal.

9. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)

Jason Voorhees is not technically in this film; instead the killings are carried out by an Imposter Jason, indicated by the blue markings on his hockey mask. Despite this, A New Beginning isn’t all that bad. It still holds that 80's horror movie charm, and has some iconic scenes/kills. (Damn enchiladas!) The ending was a little out there though; glad they didn’t follow through with it in the sequel.

My Favorite Kill: Eddie having his skull crushed after a leather strap is placed around his head and twisted tightly against a tree.

8. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

The New Blood pits Jason against a teenager named Tina with telekinetic powers. It sounds goofy when you read it, but it gives Jason a match; that up to this point, he has never faced. We were introduced to Kane Hodder with this installment, the first actor to portray Jason more than once, going on to play him in three more sequels after this film. (I must say that Jason’s costume in this film is probably my all-time favorite.)

My Favorite Kill: Melissa taking an axe to the face. I love how Jason throws her across the room afterwards. Seeing her lifeless body with the axe planted in her face fly over the television just adds to it.

7. Friday the 13th (1980)

The original film that started it all. This 1980 classic is not like the others in the series. With the exception of Part V, you always know who the killer is, blatantly showing Jason dispatching his victims in glorious fashion. In the original however, you are left guessing who might be carrying out the killings, showing only close-ups of gore and the murderer's hands. This gives the movie a slightly different tone than all the others. Pamela Voorhees as we all know is the killer in the original, and the rest is history.

My Favorite Kill: Marcie getting an axe to the face. Two thumbs up!

6. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Even though we caught a glimpse of Jason Voorhees at the very end in the original, it’s Part 2 where we are formally introduced to the crazed murderer. In this first outing, he dons a burlap sack as a mask. Although I think the sack mask from the 2009 Reboot is much scarier, the mask in Part 2 is still a little unsettling. Anyway, our good old sack head Jason roams the surrounding areas of Crystal Lake, picking off unsuspecting teenagers in the process. Although a grown up Jason might seem illogical since he drowned as a boy, Part 2 is still a classic in shaping what Friday the 13th is today.

My Favorite Kill: Mark taking a machete to the face and falling down stairs while in his wheelchair.

5. Friday the 13th (2009)

The consensus I see online is you either love or hate the 2009 Remake/Reboot. Well, I for one loved it, a lot. Some did not like the fact that they made Jason run again, but I felt it made Jason appear more ruthless and vicious in this film. Actor Derek Mears knocked it out of the park with his portrayal of the hockey masked killer.

My Favorite Kill: Chewie slowly being stabbed with a screwdriver in his throat.

4. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Freddy vs. Jason is a huge blast that every horror movie fan can enjoy. Who doesn’t want to see these two legends battle it out? For a movie that was in Development Hell for over ten years, I think they pulled it off pretty well in the end. Fans of either film series each get a little of something they like. (I still think Jason won the fight, I mean, he is holding Freddy’s head at the end.)

My Favorite Kill: Trey being stabbed repeatedly in the back with a machete while lying on a bed. And if that wasn’t enough, he gets broken backwards as Jason folds the bed up with him on it.

3. Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

Part 3 is probably the best 3D movie of all time. Okay, I might be exaggerating, but it’s awesome nonetheless. Part 3 took everything that was great about Part 2, and improved upon it. Molding it into what the series will become known for. The stars aligned and Jason discovers his favorite accessory since the machete, the hockey mask. Which has become a staple of the series ever since.

My Favorite Kill: Rick having his head squeezed until his eyeball shoots out at the screen. (in 3D!)

2. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Ahhh, the fourth and final installment in the series. Ha, yeah right. After much thinking, I have come to the conclusion that Jason in The Final Chapter is the first time we really see Jason pissed off. Yeah, he killed a lot of people up to this point, but in this movie he is really mad, and it shows on screen. (Actor Ted White did an excellent job.) Every iteration of Jason that followed continued this trend; and in some cases, even upped the intensity. Perhaps this is why you can’t really keep the character dead?

My Favorite Kill: Jimmy getting a corkscrew stabbed into his hand and followed up with a meat cleaver firmly planted into his face.

1. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

In Jason Lives, Jason is brought back from the dead with a bolt of lightning. It seems as though he gains more strength and power as a result. Remember that upping the intensity I was talking about? To me, Jason Lives is the best Friday the 13th film. I think it has the perfect blend of horror, suspense, and thrills, with just the right amount of comedy to not ruin its overall horror movie tone.

My Favorite Kill: Sheriff Garris being completely bent backwards and broken in half.
Writer’s block happens when you least expect it. It can be most troublesome, and can really throw a monkey wrench into your progress.

Here are three techniques I use to handle writer’s block.

Make an outline.

When I first started writing, I never really made outlines. I had many ideas; they were all in my head, so I just started writing. This might work for some people, but not for everyone. What I found out fast was that eventually I would find myself stuck somewhere with no clear direction on where to go next. My project would stall.

Then I started making outlines.

Ever since I started making outlines, I barely ever found myself stuck anymore. In these detailed outlines, I will map out every scene of the story. Therefore, I always have the outline to look at for reference to keep me moving along. I might find myself stuck on how to word something, but I hardly find myself stuck on what to write next.

Write out of order.

You are in the middle of writing and you find yourself stuck. You are at a loss for what to write. However, you have tons of ideas brewing in your mind for a later part in your story. The solution is simple, skip the part you are on, jumping ahead to the part you have ideas for, and writing there instead.

This has worked for me many times. Here are two main reasons I recommend this…

One, if you jump ahead and write the ideas you have in your mind right now, you will not forget them. If you wait, some of the ideas you have could be hard to remember and could get lost forever.

Two, although it might be out of order, at least you are writing. You are still moving along on your story regardless of where you are.

Take time away.

The last way I handle writer’s block is taking time away from my writing. Do something else to clear your mind of everything. Watch a movie, catch up on a television show, play some video games, read a book, anything that will get you away for however long you need to relax and clear your head.

When I return to my writing, I am much more refreshed and less stressed about being stuck. This creates a perfect recipe to get the creative juices flowing again.

....

In conclusion, I wish you luck with whatever it is you are writing. I am not an expert, just a guy with a passion for writing, but hopefully some of the things I stated here can help you get past that pesky writer’s block.
M.T. Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02454648350599703167noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4544233646970274491.post-16285091733165162582016-03-02T11:00:00.000-05:002017-09-14T21:18:26.989-04:00Why I Love Horror

Although I pretty much enjoy all genres of film, my passion for the horror genre is like no other. Ever since I can remember, I have been addicted to watching horror movies.

When I was young, I use to hang out at my grandmother’s house as she would babysit me during the day when my mom was away at work. My uncle still lived there at the time, and he was into horror movies. He would end up showing me many films, most of which I can’t even remember. However, I have a distinct memory of watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. I turned it off after the opening bridge scene, because I was so freaked out.

I’ll never forget watching the Friday the 13th series and loving the brutal force of Jason Voorhees. He became my favorite and to this day, it has never changed.

My uncle had a huge stack of Fangoria magazines under a table in his bedroom. In the land before the internet, Fangoria, a monthly horror publication, was possibly the only way to learn about upcoming horror releases or get a behind the scenes look on your favorite horror movies.

When most kids my age or older would sneak into bedrooms to look at nudie magazines, I was sneaking into his to look at the photos in Fangoria. It was there, flipping through those pages, that I first got an intimate glimpse into the world of horror filmmaking.

With my young eyes, I saw the makeup process that transformed Robert Englund into the iconic Freddy Krueger, or some of the men behind the mask of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. I believe this is where my fascination with horror really blossomed into more than just a love for the movie, but a love for the craft of horror filmmaking and the grotesque special effects that are designed to terrify the viewer.

Growing up over the years with separated parents, I have the fondest memories of going to the local video store when visiting with my father. I always went to the horror section and tried to pick something out. Although he would not let me rent everything I wanted to see, it was still fun to go there and see all the VHS tapes standing on the wall. I discovered a lot of new (to me) horror movies this way. Sadly, this is something that the new generations will never be able to experience, but I am grateful that my dad took me and gave me that experience. Thanks Dad!

My mother used to let me stay up late, much later than my proposed bed time, just so I could watch new episodes of Tales from the Crypt. As you could tell, I was not like most kids my age. I do not believe I was even ten years old yet, but I loved the hell out of that show and the Crypt Keeper. Thanks Mom for letting me watch it.

I attended my first horror convention in 2003. (My uncle took me.) The first celebrity I met that day was Gunner Hansen (RIP), the actor that portrayed Leatherface in the 1974 classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I was nervous, and I did not talk to him for very long, because meeting him was so surreal. I could not even tell you how many times I have seen The Texas Chainsaw Massacre growing up.

From that first time in 2003, until now, I could not even tell you have many conventions I have attended. Before I started regularly going to conventions, my love for horror movies was high, but not as high as it is now after attending dozens of them. Having the pleasure of meeting almost all of my favorites has pushed my love for horror to new heights.

So why do I love horror?

People ask me this from time to time. I never actually sat and thought about it, until I wrote this.

Perhaps it’s all of those family connected memories growing up. I believe they slowly molded me into the fan of horror that I am today. What started as a taboo by simply viewing a movie that your parents did not want you to see because of your age, has matured into a passion. One that arguably grows as each new day passes.

Since 2012, I have compiled a top ten list of what I think are the best horror movies of the year. Not only is it fun, but it also gives me an excuse to watch as many new films as I can. Although the newer ones don’t scare me as much as the older ones did when I was younger, because every horror fan undoubtedly grows a tolerance, I still enjoy every minute of them.

Horror sometimes gets a bad rap. People periodically think differently of you, just because you’re a fan. Well, say what you’d like about the horror genre, but it’s my genre, and I love everything about it.

It has been almost an entire year since my previous Book Update. As you can see from the fancy progress bar above, I am now 60% complete the writing portion of my book. What does that mean? That means I have finished two more short stories since my update last Spring.

I know it seems like it is taking forever for me to finish my book (or at least it does to me), but I think I am progressing pretty well considering I have a full-time job and go to the gym four days a week after work. No matter how busy I am, I try to find the time to at least plop down in my chair for one hour a day and put some words on the screen.

Sometimes I wish I could do this full-time. Wake up each day, and just write. I wouldn't even have to change out of my pajamas. Okay, maybe not that last part, but one can daydream.

Also, still contemplating on a title. I have a few ideas, but not set on anything just yet.

In Other News...

I have made Official Facebook page that everyone can follow. facebook.com/officialmtsmith
Also if you are on Twitter (which I tend to post more) you can follow me @mtsmith85

This past September and November I filmed yet another short for the anthology feature film Terrortory, (Movies also take a long time to make.) A teaser trailer is online for your viewing pleasure. Last year I had a hard time compiling ten worthy films, and this year I had a hard time bringing it down to ten films, but I am not complaining. Here is hoping that 2016 brings us even more!

(Although I am still upset that the new Friday the 13th got pushed until 2017.)

Disclaimer: I would like to add that although I watch a lot of horror films and I try to see everything, I didn’t get to see every single horror film that was released this year. This is not my job; it’s just a hobby of mine. So if you don't see something great on this list, it’s most likely because I did not get to see it yet. Also, this list is my opinion and my opinion only. If you do not agree with it, then that is okay. Feel free to post your top 10 in the comments, but please, let's not start a war over this. It is just a list.

That being said, here is my list...

10. Knock Knock

Eli Roth has not directed a film since Hostel: Part II, so I was really looking forward to seeing The Green Inferno. After seeing it however, I was pretty disappointed with it. Knock Knock, which was released within the same month of The Green Inferno, is the better of the two films, in my opinion. The movie is completely messed up on a psychological level.

9. The Atticus Institute

The Atticus Institute was a straight to video surprise. The film is presented in a documentary style and follows a group of researchers looking to find people who have supernatural abilities. With a lot of bad luck, they eventually find someone who fits the bill, but there is more going on with her than they initially are led to believe. The only reason this film is not higher on my list is because it did have a small area where it dragged a tiny bit before reaching the climax. Other than that, this movie was crazy.

8. Tales of Halloween

Tales of Halloween is an anthology horror film comprised of ten short films revolving around, you guessed it, Halloween. Although this movie was not as enjoyable as Trick 'r Treat, it was still a blast to watch. Out of the ten shorts, I think only two of them I did not like.

7. Dark Summer

This movie had a similar vibe to It Follows, even the main character of Dark Summer was one of the actors from It Follows. For being a low budget horror film, it did a perfect job at building great creepy atmosphere. Something big budget horror movies tend to forget even exists. The surprise ending was even something I did not see coming.

6. Insidious: Chapter 3

As many people I know, I was kind of let down with Insidious: Chapter 2. I felt it was not as strong as the original, as some sequels usually go. I did not hear good things going into Chapter 3, but I gave it a shot anyway. After the movie finished, I felt it was better than Chapter 2. The whole dynamic of the girl being unable to walk around due to having broken legs added to the creep factor. It’s nice to see Leigh Whannell getting into the director’s chair. (Saw VIII next?)

5. The Lazarus Effect

This movie received a lot of negative reviews when it was first released, but when I finally got to see it, I really enjoyed the hell out of it. The story follows a group of researchers experimenting on reviving the dead. I find subjects like this very intriguing. That being said, these researchers find out the hard way why you shouldn’t play around with death.

4. The Last Shift

This movie kind of came out of nowhere for me. I did not hear much about it until after it was released. One look at the cover and I thought it was going to be another cheesy throwaway horror film, but as they say, never judge a book by it’s cover. Well, in this case, a blu-ray cover. This movie is creepy and weird from start to finish with elements reminiscent of the Manson Family. Definitely worth a top five spot.

3. I Spit on Your Grave III: Vengeance Is Mine

I honestly was not expecting much from this film going into it. Although it brings back the female lead of the 2010 remake, I was a little skeptical that the director who helmed the first two films was not doing this one. Oh man, did I sure have a surprisingly good time in the end. Not as much gore as the first two, but the gore it did have did not hold back. Also, the story had a lot more substance to it than just a typical revenge flick.

2. Deathgasm

Dethgasm is bat shit crazy, but that is a good thing. The story follows a couple of black metal fans who form a band in a garage. They accidentally release a demon onto the town by playing music written by a mysterious musician. Anyway, chaos ensues and they must fight for their lives against the now zombified townspeople. If you are a metal fan, a zombie fan, or just a horror fan, this is worth checking out. (P.S. Deathgasm is the possibly the best name for a metal band.)

1. It Follows

I know some people are not going to agree with this, but hey this list is all for fun, calm down. There were not any horror films this year that really blew me away like It Follows did. Sure, you might argue the movie has flaws, but that could be said about any film on this list or in the history of time for that matter. The concept, the music, and the execution of this film all come together into something truly amazing. An eerie atmospheric instant classic.

Honorable Mention: POD

So there it is, my Top 10 Horror Films of 2015. If you haven’t seen or even heard of any of these films, then I suggest you really look into them. If you’re into horror, then you should at least give them a rent.

So much so that trying to fit them all into one blog post would have been a nightmare. Therefore, this will be a multi-part series focusing on distractions. Who knows how long it will actually go for? As long as there are distractions, I will keep posting them.

That said; let us get into the first distraction that can halt the writing process.

The Internet.

I think we all have done it from time to time. You sit down at your computer, trying to get yourself into gear to write. You open up your word processor of choice, but then open up your internet browser and start going to your favorite websites. Before you know it an hour has passed, and you still have not started your writing.

Maybe you have started your writing, but jumped online "real quick" to check something out. Then got side tracked, and never really got back to your writing. Either way, the internet can wait. It will still be there when you are finished.

Here are three ways to distance yourself from the internet in order to focus on your writing.

1. If possible, dedicate a computer or laptop to your writing, one that does not have any internet access whatsoever. That way even if you are tempted to hop on the internet, you will not be able to.

2. Write by hand in a notebook or on a legal note pad, far away from a computer. The downside to this option is that you will eventually have to go back to your computer to type the things you wrote. The upside however, at least the writing aspect is complete. In addition, you will be able to edit some of your writing as you go through and type it up.

3. If the other two options just do not work for you then the last step to rid yourself of the internet is simply shutting off your internet modem or home wifi connection. With this option, you will not have access to the internet throughout your home, until you turn it back on. It may sound drastic, but if it allows you to get some writing finished, then so be it.

I am not a fan of Horror movies that receive a PG-13 rating, and I sure do hate it when Hollywood cuts an R rated film down just to get a PG-13 rating. PG-13 rated Horror films are mostly, for a lack of a better term, crap. However, there are a few diamonds hidden within the huge Mt. Everest sized rough.

Here is what I think are the Top 10 PG-13 Horror Films of All Time.

10. The Sixth Sense

Everyone remembers the famous line, “I see dead people.” The Sixth Sense, known for its twist ending, is a fun chilling horror film without all the blood and gore. Staring Bruce Willis, the film became almost an instant classic among horror fans. Unfortunately, for director M. Night Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense seemed to be a one hit wonder for him as none of his later horror films captured the essence this film delivered.

9. Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Killer Klowns from Outer Space… I mean, the name says it all. This classic film from the 80’s is weird, creepy, and hilarious. Another film that shocked me that it was PG-13 when researching this list. The special FX’s makeup for the Klowns look superb. This one is sure to give kids nightmares for weeks. Shorty is my favorite clown in the film.

8. Tremors

A horror movie from the 90’s about giant underground worms eating people in a remote town, starring Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire. Yes, you read that right. All joking aside, this film is a classic. It started a franchise that is still going to this day. (Four sequels and a television show.) Although I am not a fan of any of the sequels, the original Tremors is great PG-13 horror.

7. Cloverfield

Cloverfield is a found footage monster film. That being said, it is one of the better found footage films. (Perhaps I should make a Best Found Footage List?) They do not show the monster a whole lot, but that is what happens in most monster movies. The film hides many strange secrets. What is up with the splash in the water at the end? The rumblings of a sequel seemed to have died, but oh well. This film is good enough by itself.

6. Drag Me to Hell

Drag Me to Hell is another movie that surprised me. By the looks of the trailer, I did not feel I was going to like it, but after viewing it, I thought it was great. I am not usually a fan of gross out horror, but this movie was fun. It is interesting that this movie is PG-13 with all the sick things in it. This one is sure to make you flinch or gag.

5. The Possession

There are many horror films about someone getting possessed and then having an exorcism to save that person. The Possession is one of the better possessed/exorcism films, especially for PG-13. The crazy things that happened once Emily gets possessed are truly terrifying. Instead of the demon performing weird contortion acts, it seems to display true power over its surroundings.

4. 1408

I really enjoyed 1408. Based on a short story by author Stephen King, the film is weird, freaky, and best of all; it is about a writer. I love seeing all the writing aspects of the film. It is inspiring, in an odd way I guess. The third act tricks you into thinking one thing, but goes somewhere else, straying from the cliché horror trends. Do not go in room 1408.

3. The Ring (2002)

The Ring is a U.S. remake of a Japanese film called, Ringu. There is enough imagery in the film to make you uncomfortable and scared without throwing gore all over the place. The sense of dread throughout the film collimates into an eerie finale.

2. Insidious

Insidious is one of those horror films you think would be rated R from the looks of the trailer. However, it is not, and just like the rest of the films on this list, it is scarier than most R rated films; which comes as no surprise from director James Wan (The Conjuring) and Leigh Whannell (Saw). The incorporation of astral projection into the story always intrigued me.

1. The Monster squad

The Monster Squad is, in my opinion, the definition of what PG-13 is. The film follows a group of kids that create a club about monsters, but end up having to save the town/world when Dracula and the rest of the Universal monsters threaten to kill everyone. The practical special FX’s in this film are top notch. (The Wolfman always terrified me as a child.) Monster Squad is a horror classic, and deserves the number one spot on this list.

Honorable Mention: The Woman in Black

This movie really surprised me. A cheesy looking horror movie staring the kid that played Harry Potter, yeah like that will be any good. Well, I was wrong. Daniel Radcliffe does a great job and The Woman in Black creates a creepy atmosphere (which some horror movies lack these days) within its haunted house, which is sure to scare you. The same cannot be said for its sequel however.

Disclaimer: As with all my lists, this is of my opinion and my opinion only. If you do not agree with this list, then that is okay. Feel free to post your top 10 list in the comments below, but there is no need to start an argument over this. It is just a list.M.T. Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02454648350599703167noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4544233646970274491.post-9848005426708243722015-07-03T12:30:00.000-04:002017-09-14T21:20:02.413-04:00Writing: Finish What You Started – Setting Yourself Up for SuccessThere is nothing more discouraging than being passionate about writing, yet never able to truly finish anything; having it always lurking in the back of your head as just another unfinished project. I will get to it eventually, or one day I will work on it, you say to yourself.

Here are some of my tips to help set you up for writing success.

Set a deadline for yourself and strive to reach it.

It was not until I entered a contest that I found what a beauty a deadline could be. Yeah, deadlines can stink, but if you are writing for yourself, deadlines can be a blessing. The contest deadline kicked me into gear to write every day in order to complete it in a timely fashion.

Now when I write, I give myself a deadline. A realistic due date that works for me. This lingering date ultimately motivates me to write more often in order to meet that deadline.

You know your schedule; you know what you are writing, look at a calendar and decide for yourself how long you think it will take to write it. If you are writing a novel, maybe break it down by chapters, having a deadline for each one. Small steps are better than no steps.

Create an outline.

Some people write without outlines, and that is fine, but for others, like me, they can help you stay on the right track. I never use to create outlines, but I also never finished anything I wrote either. Now I create a bullet style outline of every scene before I even get into the writing.

When I begin the writing process, I will keep it close by, crossing off the bullets as I go. Not only does this keep me on track, but following the outline clears my mind of thinking about what is next in the story. This lets me think solely on the scene I am currently writing, helping me put as much detail into it as possible.

Find time to write every day.

I wrote a couple of months back on How to Write on a Daily Schedule. In there I talked about how you can get yourself into the habit of writing every day.

Even if it is just for an hour a day, every little bit of writing will help you reach your deadline goal.

Do not edit as you write – just write.

One of the big mistakes I made early on was trying to edit my work as I moved along. I constantly went back to parts I had written and tweaked them repeatedly. Not only did I try to make the writing flawless, but I also kept trying to add things in to make it better.

Long story short, the re-writing did not move me forward, which never allowed me to finish what I was trying to write. All I ended up with was a pile of random pages and an unfinished story.

Save all the edits for when you are finished with a rough draft. That is why they call a rough draft, because it is not complete yet. Getting the whole story down is the first major step. Afterwards, you can go back and sweeten things up. If you think of something new to add, jot it down on a piece of paper and add it in after you have your rough draft completed.

….

In conclusion, I wish you luck with whatever it is you are writing. There is nothing more frustrating than having something you started writing months, sometimes even years ago, but have never been able to finish. I am not an expert, just a guy with a passion for writing, but I hope that some of the things I shared here can help you finally start finishing rather than just beginning.

I will leave you with this quote...

“If you really want to do something, you'll find a way.

If you don't, you'll find an excuse.”

With 93 episodes spanning over 7 seasons, each half hour episode had its own story and followed a different set of characters. A rotting corpse known as The Crypt Keeper hosted the show, setting up each episode’s story before it began and closing the episode out after it finished.

Television shows revolving around horror are very popular right now. There has been a surge of horror themed shows in the last few years. Shows like Bates Motel, Hannibal, American Horror Story, and The Walking Dead. I know there are many more on the air right now, but these are the ones that I try to keep up with and enjoy. They are all brilliant in their own way. Some are even pushing the boundaries on how much gore they can show on cable.

New seasons of Tales from the Crypt could capitalize on the growing trend of horror television shows. However, I believe Tales from the Crypt would still stand out from the crowd, not only from its history, but also from the intrigue of each episode having a different unique story. That way there could always be something for everyone.

This is why I think now (as I write this in 2015) is the best time to bring back the Tales from the Crypt television show. I say the television show, because Tales from the Crypt appeared first in comic book form back in the 1950’s.

Tales from the Crypt not only had one of the most memorable theme songs (I am humming it to myself as I write this), but it also had one of the most memorable show openings. The camera slowly moving its way inside a mansion, down the stairs to a dungeon, all the way to the coffin The Crypt Keeper rested in. To this day, I think it is the coolest thing. People who remember the show know what I am talking about, if you do not, then take a trip on over to YouTube.

The show’s host, The Crypt Keeper, was a puppet operated by a six-man crew and voiced by John Kassir. According to his IMDb page, John Kassir is still very active. He also makes appearances at conventions. Having him come back to the show is a no-brainer. I know they are many talented voice actors out there, but having the original voice actor come back to voice The Crypt Keeper once again, would be amazing.

The story part of each episode (the tale) were always written and/or directed by someone new and featured an all-new cast. Theoretically, they could film multiple episodes simultaneously.

There are a lot of up-and-coming horror directors and writers with tons of fresh ideas just waiting to be tapped. I am sure most of them would kill to make an episode of Tales from the Crypt, not only for nostalgia purposes, but also for the chance to have their work shown on cable for millions to see. This opportunity could very well be the thing some of them are looking for the advance their careers.

I myself would die if I had a chance to write an episode. Once I got up off the floor, I would begin writing immediately.

In my opinion, I think the best time of the year to air any new episodes of Tales from the Crypt would be October. Starting in September, they could air a small season run of about eight episodes, going throughout October, and finishing up around Halloween. What is a better way to celebrate Halloween, than with the Crypt Keeper?

In conclusion, next year (2016) will be twenty years since the show has been off the air. I think it is about time The Crypt Keeper came back to tell us all some more tales.

That said, I think HBO, or whoever, should really consider bringing back Tales from the Crypt. I say "whoever," because I do not know who owns the rights to the television show anymore. To me, it does not really matter. Please, just bring back Tales from the Crypt.
Writing consistently on a daily schedule can be even harder.

Trust me, I know.

I have gone days, weeks, sometimes even months between writing sessions. However, I recently figured out how to get myself writing on a daily schedule. Helping me finish two short stories and a screenplay over the past year. In this guide, I will give you advice on how I learned to write on that daily schedule.

Find the time of day that works for you.

The first thing you need to do is find yourself the right time of day. The best time that you will be able to sit down, away from all the distractions of life, and focus on your writing. I would recommend a time frame anywhere between 1 to 3 hours. Mornings, afternoons, even if it is midnight, find your time and lock it down.

Set small reachable daily goals.

Setting small reachable daily goals will not only inform you of how much you accomplished that day, but will also help motivate you. Completing these goals can help build inspiration inside yourself, driving you to complete more each day.

I tend to go by word count or page count, depending on what I am writing. When I write fiction, I aim for a 300 to 500 word count goal in one writing session. When writing a screenplay, I aim for a goal of 2 to 4 pages per day.

The amount of words or pages you set for yourself to reach each day is up to you, but making them reasonable is the key part. Starting yourself off with an unrealistic daily goal will not only set you up for failure, but not attaining that goal will drown your motivation from those failures. Set your goal low, and aim to hit that goal each day. You can always up the goal as you start new projects and are more accustomed to writing every day.

Write.

Write. Write. Write. Stick with it and I promise you will become accustomed to it. The more you get use to writing daily, the more you will feel odd when you skip a day. You might feel like your writing is moving along slowly, but the key to it all is that it is consistent. You will be able to finish things a lot faster than writing whenever you feel like it. In the end, you will accomplish more, and the more you accomplish, the more you will look forward to doing it.

Try not to skip a day unless you truly have to.

There will come days where you might not be in the writing mood. You might want to just skip a day, which is fine, but whenever I skip a day of writing I feel like nothing was accomplished. On those days, use some of the things you love doing to help motivate you to get just a little writing finished. For me, I use video games and television as a motivator. I force myself to get at least one hour of writing complete before jumping into a video game, catching up with a television show, or watching a movie. I might not always feel it going in, but once I am done with my hour writing session, I am happy that I actually did.

If you do skip a writing day here or there, that is fine. I mean, sometimes life happens. If you can, make it more like a reward to yourself than anything. For example, if you greatly exceed one of your daily word or page count goals, then taking a day off would be a nice reward.

Things to consider.

The suggestions I have given you here all stem from the fact that you have outlined everything that you are going to write. If you have everything mapped out, then getting yourself into a daily writing schedule will go fast and smoothly. If not, you can also use this same process for creating an outline, working on it a little each day before diving into the writing portion, never skipping a beat and never loosing that daily writing habit.

....

In conclusion, I wish you luck with whatever it is you are writing. I am not an expert, just a guy with a passion for writing, but hopefully some of the things I stated here can help you to write on a daily schedule.M.T.

It has been a little while since my last update. Time flies! In the last year, I not only wrote my first screenplay, but I also filmed a segment titled Smiling Jack for the upcoming horror anthology film, Terrortory. I will talk more about that later.

Also in the last year since my update, I finished writing two more short stories for my book. As you can see from the fancy progress bar above, I am 40% complete the writing portion of the book.

I just wanted to provide an update on things, since it has been so long since my last update. I wanted it to be clear that I am still plugging away on my book. I have not given up, nor do I ever tend to. I still have a lot left ahead of me, but I am enjoying the process every step of the way.

I am still contemplating a title.

In other news...

I am going to start posting more often. I have many random ideas that I believe will make for great posts on here. I have been very busy writing my book, but I think I can manage at least one good post a month.

Stay tuned!

I feel as though they all turned out to be disappointments or just mediocre. One of the films I was most looking forward to, The Green Inferno, got pulled from release for financial issues or something. I felt that it would have been a strong contender for the number one spot. Maybe next year.

Disclaimer: I would like to add that although I watch a lot of horror films and I try to see everything, I didn’t get to see every single horror film that was released this year. This isn’t my job; it’s just a hobby of mine. So if you don't see something on this list, it’s because I did not get to see it yet. Also, this list is my opinion and my opinion only. If you do not agree with it, then that is your problem. Feel free to post your top 10 in the comments, but do not start a flame war over this. It is just a list.

That being said, here is my list...
10. Open Grave

I had Annabelle at my number 10 spot on my list for quite some time, but I grew such a hatred for that film that I did not want it on my list just as filler. Sure, Open Grave is not the best horror film, but it’s damn sure more enjoyable to watch than Annabelle.
9. The Canal

The Canal is a creepy foreign film. The only reason it is not higher on my list is because I hated the ending. I think it had a lot going for itself, but then went with a very cliché way of wrapping it all up. Don’t get me wrong though, it was still one of the best this year had to offer.
8. Deliver Us From Evil

So many people bashed Deliver Us From Evil, but I actually enjoyed it. I thought the story was engaging. It had enough creeps and mystery to keep it interesting throughout. The end scene was really awesome in my opinion. I don’t want to give away too much, but for something so overdone, they did a good job making it feel awesome.
7. As Above, So Below

The one major thing that this film really has going for itself is atmosphere. It really makes you feel like you are stuck underground in the catacombs of Paris. If you are claustrophobic, you aren’t going to like this one. It wouldn’t be complete without the addition of a bunch of creepy sights throughout the film. I really enjoyed watching this one.
6. Oculus

Oculus was a big surprise for me, which is odd, because most of the films this year disappointed. I went in not expecting much, but came out enjoying it. I really enjoyed how the Kaylie character painstakingly setup a way of proving that a mirror was much more than just a mirror. The eerie parts of the film were heightened by the films supernatural presence, which made things even creepier.
5. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

Most people trash the Paranormal Activity films. I for one am a fan of them. After the disappointment of PA4, I was skeptical about going into this "spinoff" sequel. In the end, I really liked this entry in the series. It did connect into the previous films, in a way. The ending blew my mind. Hate these films all you want, but The Marked Ones was more enjoyable to watch than the laughable, VHS: Viral.
4. See No Evil 2

I have to admit that I enjoyed the first See No Evil when it came out. I know it was bad, but I enjoyed it. See No Evil 2 tops the first one in my opinion. I wasn't expecting much, but really had fun with it. It really brought me back to the 80's slasher films. Yeah, it had some corny parts, but nothing that torn away from it overall. If you are a slasher movie fan then this is a must see.

3. Extraterrestrial

I’m beginning to become a big fan of The Vicious Brothers. Oh who am I kidding, I already am. I really enjoyed both the Grave Encounters films, so I was looking forward to Extraterrestrial. I had fun with their take on the alien sub-genre. There was only one part that I didn’t like, but it didn’t take away from the film overall. I really look forward to what The Vicious Brothers do next. Oh, and I would totally watch a Grave Encounters 3, just saying.
2. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

If you couldn’t already tell that I’m an 80’s slasher fan, well then here you go. A half-remake and half-sequel to the original, 2014's The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a bloody, gory ride. Although the ending was a little lackluster, I still enjoyed this one quite a lot. The chase scene with the naked girl was one of my favorite parts.
1. The Purge: Anarchy

If you remember, The Purge was on my list last year at the number ten spot. I was being very generous if you ask me, because that film made me a little made that such an excellent concept was wrapped around a home invasion film. The Purge: Anarchy on the other hand gets everything right. It's set in the city and is filled with crazy, gory chaos. This film is what The Purge should have been all along. I really hope they continue this into The Purge 3, which has already been announced.

So there it is, my Top 10 Horror Films of 2014. If you haven’t seen or even heard of any of these films, then I suggest you really look into them. If you’re into horror, then you should at least give them a rental.
